OF THE TRANSPARENT ENTITY
The Transparent Entity is more than an exhibition, an installation, or a contemporary art piece. As an allegory of labour and the contemporary conditions of production, The Transparent Entity is, at the same time, a place for exhibition reception, a place for reflection, a space for meeting and work, and a tool for critically engaging the evolution of the social definition of work.
On these conceptual premises, The Foundry is a complementary are, installed next to The Transparent Entity. Initially defined as the C.A.S.I.T.A. workspace during the initial development of the project in one of the halls of Matadero Madrid, and later an open workspace for invited artists, it is finally open as a work area for the public.
It contains The Decalogue, The Library, The Media archive, as well as other resources used by the project and provided to the public.
The function of The Foundry is that of integrating, unifying, and discursively linking the different elements of the project (in this case, the documentation effort, the design of the library and the working area, as well as the didactic and performative dimension of The Transparent Entity).
According to the Post-Fordist conditions of production relations, no distinction is made in the Foundry between consulting, archiving, or being part of the working team. No distinction is made between consumption, communication, social relations and production. Both the work process and the programmed events, as well as the public and participation are oriented towards the production of value: discursive, symbolic value... It is, simultaneously, a place for work and the result of work.
The first installation of The Foundry took place in one of the halls of Matadero Madrid between April and May 2007. The public had access to the Library and the Media Archive. The C.A.S.I.T.A. collective had a number of working meetings with cultural collectives and producers in order to generate a network of study on labour, every Saturday evening during those two months.
After June 2007, and once the set-up of The Transparent Entity was complete in one of the Matadero's industrial naves, the Foundry was moved next to it, as an appendix and a complement.
THE MEDIA ARCHIVE
The Media Archive is the Library's audiovisual complement. It extends the
map of theorical references of the "Earning a Living" project, and
presents a series of references from the history of cinema and audiovisual
art which have touched upon, since the beginning, the complex problem of
production relations and trade union struggle.
The organisation of the Media Archive attempts to emphasise this
aspect in the way it is organised: the titles are grouped around a
number of dates considered by us as key moments in the historical
transformations of the past century:
1918, 1945, 1968, 1977, 1989, 1999, 2001,
and 2006.

THE LIBRARY
The Library is constituted by both a selection of books pertaining to
the subject matter, as well as a set of references and links to other
contents and audiovisual documentation. The intention of the Library is
that the relationship to the available content be a dynamic one,
conditioned by the operation and transformation of the Foundry
itself. Finally, to guarantee that even in that initial stage of
development, the working process be available to the public, although in
terms of consultation only. It is not the case of a normal library - all
the available content is organised according to the logic of our
conceptual Decalogue, emphasising certain parts and references in the
texts and materials according to a specific mapping-out system we
devised.
